At DSLV we believe P.E. to be essential to the academic, social, emotional and physical development of the whole child. PE in DSLV provides the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and promotes character building, co-operation and self-esteem.
Through Physical Education we aim to develop skill, fitness, strength and mobility by participation in enjoyable activities which help to encourage such qualities as leadership, team spirit and sportsmanship.
We plan a varied and balanced programme of work so that all children are introduced gradually to more demanding activities, each requiring a different kind of skill development.
All children have the chance to learn to swim before they leave our school, and opportunities are also provided for pupils to meet in friendly competition within the school and with other schools and to excel in individual performance.
Competitions that children have been involved in this year include:
- Cross Country (YR 3/4/5/6,)
- Quick sticks Hockey (YR 3/4)
- Rugbyfest (Yr 1/2)
- Mini Red- Tennis ( YR 3/4)
- Kwik Cricket (Yr 5/6)
- Year 6 Leavers Rounders (Yr 6)
Recent highlights including sports team successes:
On Wednesday 26th April, Year 5 and 6 competed in a KS2 Daventry Cross Country event at Daventry Sports Park. DSLV were one of 22 schools that took part competing for individual and team glory. Split into different races by gender and year group, the children battled strong winds, rain, hail and sunshine to overcome courses between 1750m (year 5) – 1900m (year 6), earning points for DSLV based on their finishing position. The children all showed great determination, perseverance and self-belief with each one of them crossing the finish line! All of the children received a certificate to acknowledge their achievements! Well done to all of them!
Quick sticks Hockey
On Wednesday 3rd May, Year 4 competed in a Quick sticks Hockey event at The Parker E-Act Academy.
The children all showed great team work, determination and perseverance and deserved their second place win!
‘It was our first tournament for hockey and we were all really excited! We made it through to the semi-finals and faced some really tough opponents. We managed to beat them with a last minute goal and went through to the final. We had played amazing and were all really pleased to be playing in the final. In the final against Staverton we again played brilliant and it went to extra time in a very tight and tense game. Every single one of us gave everything for the team and for the school and to have got to this point made us all really proud. Unfortunately, we lost on golden goal but we were still happy to have made it that far and pushed a great team all the way. It was an incredible experience for us at DSLV and we all really enjoyed it a lot!’
On 11th May, 10 KS1 children went to Long Buckby to participate in a range of skill based activities. These games focused on the various different skills required to play rugby and were a good introduction to the sport for those that had not played before.
